Copenhagen
by Michael Frayn
17th - 25th September 2004
Directed by David Crook
1941. Germany's leading scientist Werner Hieisenberg makes a remarkable visit to his old professor, Neils Bohr in occupied Copenhagen. The two old friends, now parted by war, discuss the possibility of applying their genius to the creation of atomic bombs. What actually happened? Why was the meeting so brusquely aborted by Bohr? What was Heisenberg seeking from Bohr? And why did Heisenberg fail
to develop an atom bomb for Hitler?
The characters try to unravel the Copenhagen mystery from the hindsight of eternity.
The audience must judge whether Heisenberg really intended to perpetrate such an act, and whether decisions taken on that day in 1941 saved us from destruction.
COPS have assembled an accomplished cast, all of whom have been acclaimed in recent years for leading roles in local productions, with Chris Janes as Heisenberg, Ray Newton as Bohr, and Claudia McKelvey as his wife, Margarethe. The script, by Michael Frayn, best known for comedies such as "Alphabetical Order" and "Noises Off" is fast gaining a reputation as a modern classic.
